The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
The treasures of giving up one’s life to follow Jesus make the American dream look like a cart selling cheap fake jewelry. When you get bored with a fake gold necklace, it’ll hand you a fake bracelet, and then a fake watch. It’ll keep feeding us the fake treasure until we die bored, safe, and lifeless, lacking the experience of holding true treasure.
True treasure is in surrender. True joy is in giving, not accumulation.
God, save us from the neutering of American Christians by the spirit of the American Dream.
