The Happiest Day of My Life is Not Coming Up

In a little over a week, I’m going to be married. And that’s really friggin’ awesome.

Many people drool over this moment, and many people will reflect back on their lives saying that the happiest day of their lives was their wedding. And I can imagine why–it’s really fun, it’s a really significant life event, it’s the joining of two awesome lives together for lifelong partnership, etc..

Yet I was spending time with God this morning and I had a different revelation.

I’m again convicted and moved by some of my favorite passages of all time..

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My heart and my flesh may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26

One thing I have desired of the Lord, this one thing will I seek. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. To gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

The happiest day of my life is not my upcoming wedding (as awesome as it is); it is the time I have with God every day.

Nothing compares to my relationship with him. And if I am looking for, in my wife, what I have not yet found in God, then I will be utterly disappointed with marriage. For marriage, however great my spouse is (and she is very great) fills only a portion of my heart. And that is nothing against her, it is just the way our hearts have been designed.

We have been made for love–divine love. To know God is life. His love is better than life (Ps 63). For to live is Christ. And as I stand there on my wedding day, I will be happy. But as I stand before God all the days of my life I shall be completely happy.

He is my joy, my rock, my comfort, my love, and the greatest Love of my life. Jesus, my magnificent obsession, the greatest taste.
